100 Years of Judge
For the last century, Judge Memorial Catholic High School has created, fostered, and sustained a legacy of excellence in education.
Beginnings
The footprint for our current school building was originally Judge Mercy Home, a hospital established for Catholic coal miners working in Park City and founded by immigrants-turned-Silver King Mine magnates John and Mary Judge. As the need for a hospital dedicated to the care of Black Lung patients subsided, Mary Judge (her husband now deceased) worked with the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake to convert the facility into a school. Mary Judge, considered a pioneering entrepreneur of the era, passed away just before what is now Judge Memorial opened in 1921.
The School
In those early years, Judge was co-ed and run by the beloved Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. In 1964, Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal brought in the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales to run it as an all-boys school, while girls could attend St. Mary of the Wasatch Academy. Finally, in 1970, St. Mary closed, and girls once again joined the boys at Judge.
With the present-day guidance of a committed administration, faculty, and staff, the school continues to build upon the legacy of Catholic education started by Mary Judge and continued over the decades by all members of the Judge community.
100 Year Celebration
The Centennial Celebration, which took place Aug. 27, 2022, was a huge success with more than 1,100 people in attendance. Past, present, and future Bulldogs were celebrated. Congratulations Judge Memorial on 100 years and we look forward to the bright future ahead!

“Year by Year at Judge,” a near-comprehensive catalog of Judge’s history, honors everyone who made the past 100 years possible. It’s the brainchild of 1972 alumnus Mike Gorrell, a veteran journalist and author who bleeds red and gold. Enjoy Our Living History.
