The Year
Construction of the school complex was completed. Judge then began all-out expansion of its athletic and academic programs.
The annual Homecoming Banquet, on Dec. 28, 1933, emphasized that this senior class would be Judge’s 10th group of graduates, adding up to 200 alumni. Alumni officers were Lawrence Brennan, Class of 1928, president; William McDougall, Class of ’27, vice president; Irene Laramie, Class of ’29, secretary; and Woodrow Cook, Class of ’30, treasurer.
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake at 8:05 a.m. on March 12, 1934 in the Hansel Valley, northeast of the Great Salt Lake, shook the Judge school building hard – “all the schools of the city were closed for a day and a half.” Everyone who was in the Judge building evacuated, “standing around in breathless suspense for it to collapse,” in part based on worries about the springs under the school liquifying the ground. They didn’t. But the early dismissal left a “cargo of happy students overjoyed by the extra holiday.”
There were 26 graduates on June 1 in the Judge Auditorium. Bishop James Kearney presided.
General Excellence award: Kane O’Carroll.
Scholarships for General Excellence: Mary Geraldine Park to St. Mary’s-of-the-Wasatch College; Charles Murphy to Carroll College in Montana; and Mary Josephine McFarland to Henager Business College. Kane O’Carroll read an essay on “Don Bosco” while Helene Cope recited her essay on “The Maryland Tercentenary.”
