Representing St. Mary’s at Girls State were Mary Kay Carr, Helen Grose and Arline Miyazaki.
Fr. William Flegge took 67 boys and girls, including many Judge and St. Mary’s students, to California for a two-week trip that included visits to San Francisco University, Golden Gate Park, Huntington Beach and Disneyland. The trip also featured daily guitar masses.

Mary Beth Davidson was chairwoman of “School Spirit Week” at St. Mary’s, an event that kicked off with Julie Fox and Judge senior Jim Schubach addressing a joint assembly of the schools on spirit.

St. Mary’s students started a “Peace Corps School Partnership Program” to raise funds to help the Peace Corps encourage self-help and “break the cycle of ignorance” in slum areas in developing countries.
Enforcing school rules and regulations was the responsibility of the 32 girls in Student Control, including president Maureen Lahey, “jurors” Kristine Fassio, Barbara Roser, Deborah Kleffner, Pam McDonough, Mary Schubach and Kass Roberts, and members Irene Elizondo, Becky Nourse, Karen Stamper, Pam Grubaugh, Peggy Arentz, Victoria Armuth, Elizabeth Kepinski, Judy Swenson, Sharon Williams, Lidia Wasowicz, Kathleen Roberts, Pamela Anton, Theresa Mills, Jeanie Gagnon, Mary Beth Davidson, Launa Clayborne, Kathleen Cordova, Jeanne Last, Patricia Gareau, Monica Colosimo, Patricia Thomas, Sonja Makinen and Becky Smith. Their adviser was Sr. Carole.
Dressing up for the Great Pumpkin Ball were Jeanne Last, Vicki Wawrzyniak, Deirdre Stephens, Peggy Arentz and Michele Guss.
The Varsity Cheerleaders were Vicki Ventura, Patricia Thomas, Helen Grose, Betsy Mates and Judge students Bob Jackson, Edmond Fritz, Rick Davidson and Dennis Whitley. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders were Patricia Bruce, Mary Beth Davidson, Kristine Fassio, Kerri Howa, Mike Cheshire, Kevin Donahue, John Bailey and Paul Schwab.
The marching squad at St. Mary’s was one of five high school pep squads invited to participate in Westminster College’s Homecoming festivities.
Vicki Wawrzyniak was drill mistress of the Marching Squad, which featured assistant drill mistress Peggy Arentz, drummer Patricia McGuire and members Vicki Lane, Sandi Kolb, Mary Kay Ravarino, Irene Elizondo, Carla Ausick, Karen Bianchi, Toni Jones, Patricia Gareau, Charlene Cvar, Victoria Long, Jeanie Gagnon, Becky Nourse, Deborah Kleffner, Pam Grubaugh, Margaret Bailey, Therese Russo, Mary Schubach, Margaret Reineccius, Debbie Nourse, Kathy Kelly, Kathleen McGinley, Jane Ringholz, Lynn Zeiger, Martha Waller, Pam McDonough, Melissa McIntyre, Charlotte Mates, Kerry Yanni, Jane McGill, Mary Jo Cafarelli, Dorothy Sakech, Pam Razzeca, Sue Hession, Vickie Hesse, Becky Dean and Kathy Bray. “Come September” was the theme of Homecoming. Vicki Wawrzyniak was chosen as queen. Becky Dean was her senior attendant. The junior attendant was Deirdre Stephens.
Marilou Blair was editor of the Teleview newspaper, assisted by Patricia McGuire, Julie Fox, Norma Tabish, Roberta Lynch, Elizabeth Kepinski, Linda Sharp, Sonja Makinen, Mary Sue Clement and Nancy Hunter. Sr. Mary Helen was the adviser. The newspaper was helped by members of the typing class, including Marcy Clifford, Charlyn Eikrem, Lynn Economou, Theresa Mills, Christine Soltis and Leslie Gillett.
Modeling the latest fashions for Utah department stores were Mary Nak and Helen Grose (ZCMI), Mary Kay Carr (Paris), Betsy Mates and Peggy Arentz (Jak’s), Becky Dean and Becky Nourse (Castleton’s), Patricia Bruce (Adrien n’ Emilie) and Mary Beth Davidson, Vicki Wawrzyniak and Jeanie Gagnon (Tweed n’ Twill).
Involved in “Spirit Week” activities in early December were Sharon Williams, Becky Dean, Maureen Lahey, Becky Nourse, Kathleen Cordova, Charlene Cvar, Vicki Wawrzyniak, Kathy Cook, Becky Smith, Charlotte Mates, Lynn Harner, Ann Crandall and Jane McGill.
The officers of Sodality were prefect Arline Miyazaki, vice president Victoria Mefford, secretary, Donna Larsen and treasurer Christine Butler. Members included LaVelle Brown, Jeanne Last, Pamela Anton, Patricia Guthrie, Joanne Bingle, Jeanne Oki, Cecelia McGlone, Nancy Smith, Margaret Hanley, Kathy Cook, Janet Anderson, Linda Sharp, Susan Cherizola, Theresa Garcia, Veronica Quiroz, Barbara Roser, Celia Tezak, Marilou Blair and Susan Gareau. Sr. Margaret Denyse advised.
A pizza party designed to help boys and girls in the sophomore class to get acquainted so they could prepare for the Sophomore Strut attracted Mary Phillips, Roberta Jewett, James Gonzalez and John Sweet. “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” was the theme of the dance.
Members of the St. Mary’s Orchestra were Barbara Last, Linda Sharp, Arline Miyazaki, Pam McDonough, Pauline Johnson, Martha Waller, LaVelle Brown, Janet Wright, Terri Myers, Jody Tuft, Kass Roberts, Jeanne Last, Kathleen Roberts, Karen Bianchi and Toni Jones. Their moderator was Sr. Constance Mary while Sr. Cecelia was the director.
Kathleen McGinley and her dad won the Charleston dance contest at the Father-Daughter Dance, organized by Kerri Howa, Helen Grose, Trish Economou, Victoria Mefford and Karen Bianchi.
Foreign students earning their educations at St. Mary’s were Beatriz Estra, Virginia Lopez, Sonia Covarrubias, Lourdes Choza, Veronica Quiroz, Brigida Gonzales, Consuelo Trucios, Susan Cherizola and Maria Flores. Sr. Margaret Denyse oversaw these students.
“Women of Faith” who provided service to others included Becky Smith, Jeanie Gagnon, Kathy O’Neill, Maureen Lahey, Theresa Mills, Leslie Gillett, Margie Anderson, Arline Miyazaki, LaVelle Brown, Donna Larsen, Pamela Anton, Beverly Sawaya, Toni Jones and Becky Smith.
Pamela Anton was president of the Art Club, aided by fellow officers Nancy Hunter (vice president and secretary) and Martha Waller (treasurer). Some of the top artists were Joanne Bingle, Paula Stringham, Mary Nak, LaVelle Brown, Donna Larsen, Frances Otero, Jane Reid, Gayle Sadler, Kathy Holland and Nancy Hernon.
The Glee Club was led by president Toni Jones, vice president Christine Butler, secretary Betsy Mates and treasurer Mary Beth Davidson. Featured singers were Linda Sharp, Mary Kay Reid, Patricia Gareau, Kathy Uzelac, Roberta Jewett, Kristine Fassio, Peggy Arentz, Sarah Long, Jeanne Last, JoAnn Galloway, Beverly Sawaya, Donna Larsen, Cynthia Colosimo, Sue Hession, Becky Dean, LaVelle Brown, Arline Miyazaki, Norma Tabish, Anne Chambers, Roseanne Colosimo, Kerry Yanni, Becky Smith, Shirley Kutz, Victoria Long and Jeanie Gagnon. Sr. Constance Marie was their director. A solo by Beverly Sawaya was the highlight of the Saint Cecelia Day program in November.
The Language Club officers were president Kerri Howa, vice president Lidia Wasowicz, secretary Mary Kelsey and representatives of French (Jane McGill), Spanish (Lynn Harner) and Latin (Patricia Guthrie) classes. Members included Victoria Armuth, Jeanne Last, Judy Swenson, Sonja Makinen, Patricia Sadler, Constance Crotty, Linda Gross, Evelyn Ellis, Debra Lyons, Pam Vescio, Candy Hendrickson and Paula Farikoff. The Spanish Club put on a production of “Hansel and Gretel,” starring Barbara Tezak, Marilyn McIntyre, Melissa Ruberts and Betsy Miller.
Vicki Ventura was crowned queen of the Senior Prom, with Sally Long and Deirdre Stephens as her attendants. Royalty at the Junior Prom featured Queen Jeanie Gagnon and King Mike Chambers, senior attendants Becky Nourse and Steve Meyer and junior attendants Betsy Mates and Bob Barber.
The St. Mary’s chapter of the Model United Nations represented El Salvador, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Kuwait. Mary Lou Williams was president of the organization. Michele Guss was vice president, Pat Tezak was secretary and Patricia Gareau was treasurer. Members consisted of Pam McDonough, Betsy Mates, Jeanne Last, Margaret Brusatto, Kathy Uzelac, Roberta Jewett, Becky Nourse, Kathleen Roberts, Michele Tezak, Kristine Fassio, Therese Russo, Nancy Bagley, Kerri Howa, Betsy Miller, Sonja Makinen, Francesca Xaiz, Monica Colosimo, Victoria Long, Lynn Zeiger, Charmaine Brusatto, Michele Everill, Jane Ringholz, Nancy Hernon and Kathy Kelly.

Mary Nak and Victoria Mefford were officers in the Future Homemakers of America club, which featured Mary Kelsey, Lynn Harner, Jane McGill, Mary Kay Carr, Launa Clayborne, Patricia Coupe, Mary Kay Ravarino, Paula Padjen, Kathy Galland, Shauna Mori, Cecelia McGlone, Dee Dee Gallegos, Elizabeth Muije, Patricia LaBrel, Cecily Smart, Delila Nak, Joan Collette, Michelle Galland, Susan Petrick, Claudia Meldrum, Susan Stout and Sandra Vance. Sr. Beatrice was their adviser.

St. Mary’s girls Madeline Walker, Kathleen Cordova and Helen Grose defeated Judge boys Steve Fake, Dennis Kelly and Phil Barger 108-90 in The Salt Lake Tribune’s Inquiring Editor program, hosted by Mike Korologos.

Graduation
In separate ceremonies June 1 at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 102 Judge boys and 60 St. Mary’s girls received their diplomas from Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal.
